We all know that eating fresh fruits and vegetables is best, right? Well, generally that is true, but a new study published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture tells us that – as always – there is an exception to the rule.
Canned peaches have as many – and in some cases MORE – nutrients as fresh peaches. Yes, that’s right, breaking out the can opener can get you the same nutritional punch as breaking through the fuzzy skin of a fresh peach.
Using vitamin C as an example: the study finds that there is almost four times as much vitamin C in canned peaches than fresh peaches. The canned fruit had the same levels of vitamin E, and much more folate.
The next logical question, of course, is Why? According to a food scientist at the University of California, Davis, the “canning process opens the cell walls of the fruit’s flesh, and it makes nutrients such as vitamin A more readily available to our body.” Ain’t science cool?
Of course, the feel of sinking your teeth into a fresh, juicy peach can’t be replicated with the canned version, but with peach season lasting only a few short months (and peaches being delicious all year long), it’s nice to know that you aren’t sacrificing nutrition when you go to the can. Just makes sure you buy peaches canned in their own juice, and not syrup, as syrup is high in added sugar.
