According to several studies and economic indicators, the restaurant business is outpacing the overall economy in growth/recovery. While the nation struggles with sluggish job creation, sequestration budgets, and other economic woes, Americans have apparently not stopped going out to eat.
The Knapp-Track – a monthly sales and guest count tracking report – shows an increase in sales of 2.6% in March 2013 compared to the same month last year. The Knapp-Track looked at 56 casual dining chains, and noted that April sales will likely also be better than they were last year, though perhaps not up as much as they were in March.
Along with those increasing sales, restaurants and bars are spending more on new/used restaurant equipment and supplies, as well as on upgrading and remodeling their businesses. A March survey of restaurant/bar owners showed that more than half (51%) had made a capital expenditure in the last 3 months, and an even higher percentage (56%) indicated that they planned on making such an expenditure within the next six months.
