Try a Deep-fried Turkey!

I don’t know about all of you, but when I was a kid, my dad was the cook in the house. My mom cooked, and she’s awesome at it. But my dad is the culinary mad scientist. He’ll be standing in the kitchen with chicken or fish in the pan and he’ll just start throwing spices and seasonings on it, and we’d think he was nuts. Then we shut up when we tasted the food and it was delicious. Well, a few years ago, my dad had one of his crazy cooking ideas, and since we’re getting closer to Thanksgiving, maybe this will give some of you a crazy idea as well.

The story goes like this: my family enjoys the typical Thanksgiving traditions, like watching the parade before dinner and football after, for example. But we have a few other odd ones, like my dad, brothers, and I used to run a 5K run the morning of Thanksgiving while my mom slept in. To throw in another twist to our traditions, my dad came home one day with two turkeys. Not one, like every other normal person out there; TWO. He also had another large box in the trunk of the car. Our curiosity was peaked. That was when all came together: the box carried a deep fryer, and my dad was going to dip one of those turkeys in to that deep fryer.

Now I know what you might be thinking: a deep-fried turkey? Seriously? How can any traditional person do anything to a turkey on Thanksgiving other than let it sit in the oven for hours? We had the two turkeys, so one was going to be cooked the traditional way, but we were also going to try something new. Personally, the anticipation was too much to bear. Finally the time had come for dinner, and the turkeys were served.

I’m not always known for trying new things, but that day, I felt adventurous. And let me tell you, I swear by the deep-fried turkey. It was amazing, and I probably ate more of that one than the traditional one. So this Thanksgiving, if you’re looking for a way to spice up the holiday, give this one a try. But remember, put the fryer on the porch because that thing will make it cloudy in the house if you put it there. Plus, deep fryers improperly used can lead to bad, bad things, so be safe and have a happy Thanksgiving!
