Restaurant Equipment Certification and Standards

When you purchase used restaurant equipment from One Fat Frog Restaurant Equipment you may notice a sticker somewhere on the exterior. The sticker usually has some initials or a logo on it, but WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?!?!?!

These stickers, called “marks,” mean that the equipment adheres to a variety of regional, national, and international standards. These standards are set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI), and Energy Star.

Here’s a look at what some of the most common marks mean:

• The NSF mark means that this piece of restaurant equipment has been evaluated, certified, and tested by NSF International. The equipment meets international commercial food equipment standards. It also means that the facility where the equipment was manufactured is evaluated annually.

• The cNSFu mark means that this piece of restaurant equipment meets both Canadian and U.S. requirements.

• The UL Listing mark certifies that this piece of restaurant equipment was found by UL to meet their safety requirements.

• The Energy Star mark, a mark we’re seeing more and more of nowadays, means that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has certified that this piece of restaurant equipment is energy-efficient, saving the consumer money while also protecting the environment.

Now you can sound wicked smart in front of all your chef buddies.
