A few months ago, The American Pizza Community (TAPC), which consists of Domino’s, Little Caesars, Godfather’s Pizza, Pizza Hut, and Papa John’s, converged on Capitol Hill to push for changes to a proposed menu labeling plan brought about by the healthcare reform law of 2010. The law forces chains with 20 locations or more to disclose calories on menus and menu boards – with further nutritional information available upon request.

The TAPC’s argument is that these menu boards would cost up to $5,000 per location and that 90 percent of their customers wouldn’t even see them. This is pizza we’re talking about here. Most customers order either online or over the phone, rarely looking at a menu. Factor in dozens of topping combinations and the menu boards wold be useless and confusing.

They proposed a series of alternatives, like the Domino’s Cal-O-Meter, which enables customers to punch in what they’re ordering to get a calorie count. My argument is: get real. You’re eating pizza. While it may be the greatest food on the planet, it’s not the healthiest for you. I know that. You know that. Just don’t eat it every night and be cool. Calories be damned.
