8th Grader Wins the 2012 National Spelling Bee With “Guetapans”!

Last night, 14-year-old Snigdha Nandipati beat out 278 competitors and won the Scripps National Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the word “guetapens,” an obscure French word that describes a snare or a trap. The second runner up was a 12-year-old girl from Melbourne, FL!

I never remember that the Scripps National Spelling Bee is on, but I always end up catching it on TV and being gripped by it. When each contestant goes up the suspense is crazy! It’s an important event too, since most of the youth today are writing in text talk all of the time, the importance put on literacy needs to increase. I have a friend who teaches high school and she’s told me how kids will write in their abbreviated text talk even on tests! It’s gross!
