Steve Jobs Resigns As Apple Chief Executive Officer

Late on Wednesday, Apple announced that longtime CEO Steve Jobs, 56, will be resigning from his position for health-related issues. In a letter released by Apple, Steve Jobs stated:

“I have always said that if there ever came a day whin I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.”

Steve Jobs has been struggling with cancer for several years, undergoing surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2004 and a liver transplant in 2009. Jobs has been on medical leave since January of this year, but still working stubbornly from home.

Jobs is notable as a CEO not only because of how Apple has revolutionized technology and the music industry under his supervision, but also for his high public profile and fearlessness in taking risks. Notoriously, Jobs refused to market test any Apple products. Instead, he’d go with his instinct. If he felt a product wasn’t yet worthy of the Apple logo, he’d tell his staff to start over. When Jobs felt they were ready, the product would be released to the rabidly loyal Apple fans.

Steve Jobs will become chairman of the board and Tim Cook, 50, will assume position as CEO. Although Jobs is considered by many to be irreplaceable, Cook, who was hand-picked by Jobs, is a logistics expert for Apple who was instrumental in securing contracts in advance for technology used in Apple products. Cook has been serving as interim CEO while Steve Jobs took leaves of absence.

Steve Jobs was forced out of Apple in 1985. The employees he worked for say that he was intensely hands-on and would reprimand to his peers. Jobs went on to co-found Pixar, the hugely successful animation studio behind they Toy Story films, and returned to Apple in 1997. Jobs approached his leadership position in a different way this time: he trusted his design and business team much more and gave them more freedoms. He made the final decision in product design, but not the details along the way. Experts have stated that Jobs true brilliance was as an operations expert rather than a team leader overseeing product design.

To give some perspective on Steve Jobs’ “say all” at Apple, keep in mind that in 2007, three iPhone prototypes were produced. Jobs was not satisfied with the first two and told his team to completely scrap them and start anew. The third prototype pleased him…and the iPhone was released. Jobs says that his decisions were based on his understanding of technology and pop culture, intuition, and study.

As far as Apple’s future goes, experts say that the product road map in the technology industry is set two or three years out. Apple is going to have to find a strong leader like Jobs to continue their dominance further into the future.

Kids and Frogs go hand in hand

So we did a count of Frog kids this morning.  I lost count and ran out of fingers and toes at 23.  I think there may be a few that I lost count of, but there are 23 children that eat each week because their parents work at the Frog.  This pleases me tremendously.  THIS IS WHAT LIFE IS ABOUT!  Recession, hard times, I always go back to that restaurant consultant who tried to tell me in the height of recession and family terminal cancer that if I shaved off 1.5 positions I could have that coveted Mercedes at the end of the year.

At the Frog our role is to help the community and we do that because of you.  Your support of the Frog and your spending dollars go to employees and expanding our Central Florida workforce.  Your support of the Frog puts food on the table at the Homeless shelter.  Maybe my accountant doesn’t agree that we don’t do it for the tax write off, but it’s deeper than that.

I’ve been dreaming a lot about winning the lotto.  And my friends remind me that to win that lotto I would have to actually buy a ticket, but that’s another story.  Last night I watched a show about people winning the lotto and how it changed their lives.  It didn’t take me long to think about the first thing I would do after winning the lotto.  I would drive over to that homeless shelter, get on my knees and thank God for the ability to better help them.

Maybe I’m getting over emotional here.  Okay, I know I am.  But that’s my dream, my little slice of the American Dream.

The other show I watched last night was about Extreme Couponing.  The 7 yr old was so wonderful, she saw it and promptly gathered all the coupons saying, “let’s coupon for the homeless shelter.”  Sometimes you gotta wonder the effectiveness of your parenting.  Guess she got that one on the nose.  Nose we decided we’re gonna spend one weekend looking into couponing as a family.  I’m not sure, the tv sort of made it look like a full-time job but it sure sounds like a great way to give back tot he community.

The story of the little melon baller that could…

So those of you in the food service industry will laugh at this story.  One of my good friends is an equipment distributor and always busts my chops when she comes over and finds me with regular civilian kitchenware.  This story is obviously one of those that will make you laugh.  So my very civilian, I think it may have been purchased once upon a time at Wal-mart or the dollar store or maybe inherited in some way ice cream scoop bit the bucket last year.  Mid-scoop the handle broke and I was left scooping ice cream with just the scoop sans handle.  This was not a very reasonable way to serve the buckets of ice cream my tribe likes to eat, so the next day I marched over to our smallwares area and looked for an ice cream scoop.  For some reason we had just had a run on ice cream scoops and all I could find was one little melon baller.

We named that little melon baller the little melon baller that could, we were down to eating ice cream servings smaller than our coveted Italian ice, but for over a year that melon baller worked like a charm.  Prior to eating you would get a good workout and manage your wrist muscles in process.

Back to the story at hand, kiddos wanted ice cream.  Here goes our little hostess the 7 year old, hauling out the little melon baller that could.  Now this wouldn’t be bad in a regular crew but since birds of a feather… well yeah hang down your head tom dooley, and those of you in the food service industry will know the heckling that ensued.

So yesterday I found myself in mountains of used smallwares helping a client find some items for his pizzeria.  Suddenly a box of Zeroll scoops and food service miscellany… and the angels sang… here was my much anticipated Zeroll scoop WHICH I LEFT ON MY DESK LAST NIGHT… ARGGGGH

My kids the bunny rabbits

So for Easter we bought the kids bunny rabbit ears and made them wear them for pictures.  It made for great video and photo clips.  I may be disowned once they get to high school and realize it’s forever memorialized on the net on One Fat Frog Restaurant Equipment website… but for now chuckle at ‘em.

Saturday night brought a little fun at Dexter’s in Lake Mary.  Truth be known it was probably a little more fun than I’d like to admit and I may have had to apologize for it… all of that being said there was this great band there called Rockitfly (Rockitfly.com)  and they did unbelieveable covers of bands from Journey to Michael Jackson to Foreigner to Van Halen and the very best Motley Crue.

Heaven help us if the Crue ever actually comes to Orlando because we’ll have to close shop to go listen to them!  It is true that many of us here at the frog love our Motley Crue and indeed we ourselves are quite the motley crew.
