Only one movie that matters is opening this weekend and that movie is THE GREY, starring Liam Neeson. Since 2009′s TAKEN, Neeson has reinvented himself as an action star, but not the young and hunky, mindless doofus action star. He’s worn and old and has these sad eyes that scream “experience.” In THE GREY, Neeson plays an oil worker whose crew’s plane crashes in the Alaskan wilderness. The few left alive try to walk to salvation while being hunted by a pack of wolves. The trailer gives me goosebumps and right before I wrote this post, Roger Ebert gave it 3 and a half stars. Above is a trailer for Homeless in the Magic Kingdom, an upcoming documentary concerning the plight of the homeless in Orlando. Locally made, this doc will examine and speak directly with the homeless in Orlando, a city infamous for treating its homeless and those who try to help them not so well. This is going to be an important film that will hopefully raise awareness and bring about some change in the City Beautful.

I worked at Starbucks for about a year up in Salem, MA. It was fun and they treat their employees really well (part time w/benefits). The only draw was having to wake up at 4:15, but hey, you gotta do what ya gotta do. Anyways, something tell me I would have had a lot more fun if this went down while I worked there.

Starbucks is adding beer and wine at select cafes! WOOOO! The Starbucks Corp. plans on selling beer and wine in as many as 25 locations by the end of 2012 to lure in more customers during its slower afternoon and evening hours, reports the Bloomberg Report. Starbucks first sold alcohol in October 2012 in a Seattle location. Stores in Chicago, Atlanta, and Southern California are among the new locations that will service alcohol. it’ll be interesting to see what brands they collaborate with on this venture.

With a growing awareness of autism, many restaurants, movie theaters, and other entertainment businesses are holding very special “Autism Family Nights.” This isn’t a way to cash in on others’ disorders, but instead it’s a way to welcome those parents who have children with autism. Taking an autistic child out to a restaurant is a break in their routine, which can cause difficult issues for both children and parents.

When an autistic child’s routine is broken, they can react in very angry and violent bursts. Unfortunately when this happens in a public place like a restaurant, other parents can negatively judge – not realizing the child is autistic and simply judging the folks as bad parents. This happens commonly because of ignorance concerning autism.

With an “Autism Family Night” at a restaurant, parents and their autistic children can dine with other autistic families. The restaurant can turn the music off and instruct servers to be as quiet and patient as possible. No worries about being judged, something everyone deserves. If you are interested in organizing a “Autism Family Night” at a restaurant or any other venue, you should email the owner. Be sure to include information about autism (a list helps) so that the owner can pass it around to servers and other employees. We’re going to be talking about autism around here at the One Fat Frog Blog over the next few days – for a number of reasons. If you’re unfamiliar with the disorder, this post is going to break down some basic information about it. Autism is a disorder of neural development commonly diagnosed in the early years of a child’s life. Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by repetitive and restricted behavior. Information processing in the brain is affected by autism; altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize information.

Autism is one of the three recognized disorders in the autism spectrum (ASDs), the other two being Asperger syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (usually abbreviated to PDD-NOS). Asperger lacks delays in cognitive development and language, while PDD-NOS is diagnosed when the full set of criteria for autism of Asperger syndrome are not met.

While the genetics of autism are complex, it is understood that autism has a strong genetic basis. The prevalence of autism is about 1-2 per 1,000 people wolrdwide. However, the Center for Disease Control reports that approximately 9 per 1,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with ASD. Either way you look at it, that’s a whole lot of kids. The number of people diagnosed with autism has increased dramatically since the 1908s, partly due to major changes in diagnostic practice. The CDC and others are unsure whether actual prevalence is the one increasing.

The Town of Harmony, the largest Green Certified Community in Central Florida, will be hosting their first Annual Healthy Lifestyle Festival in the Town Square on Saturday, February 25, 2012.
